We raise awareness of HIV and AIDS through our all that we do, and particularly around World AIDS Day (1st December).

We raise funds to help transform the lives of people struggling to live with the effects of HIV and AIDS in the Eastern Cape, particularly in Grahamstown in the Makana Municipal District.

Map of the region
"Emthonjeni Trust and the community of Cheltenham are significant allies in our fight against HIV and AIDS in Makana Municipality, especially through your partnership with the Raphael Centre. Enkosi!"
Cllr V Lwana, Executive Mayor, Makana Municipality

Emthonjeni Trust is currently the major funder of The Raphael Centre, the leading HIV prevention, care and support organisation in Grahamstown. The Raphael Centre employs 7 full-time and 1 part-time staff plus 25 part-time volunteers. The Director is Mrs Annalie van Niekerk

We have secured funding to enable The Raphael Centre to

  • give educational support to vulnerable 4 – 7 year olds enabling them to attend pre-primary school and receive extra help at the Raphael Centre’s after-school-club
  • offer easy access to free and confidential HIV and TB tests
  • help maintain the mobile testing service which visits several isolated rural residential and farming communities and local employers such as the South African Military Base, South African Library for the Blind, Amakhala Game Lodge and other organisations
  • reach out to women of child-bearing age to discuss ways to prevent vertical transmission of HIV
  • launch media campaigns to help reduce stigma, ensuring people with HIV and AIDS can lead their lives with dignity, free from discrimination
  • supply impoverished families with monthly food parcels.

"We couldn’t be here without you"
Annalie van Niekerk, director of the Raphael Centre
